Intro to wedding paper goods

stationery 101

When you start planning your wedding, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the details—especially when it comes to stationery. From save the dates to reception menus, many of these paper goods might be new to you, and that’s totally normal! With so many options, there’s confusion about what you need, when to send them, and how to tie everything together. But don't worry—I’m here to help guide you through each step, so you’ll feel confident about every piece of stationery for your big day! Let’s break down the essentials to make the process stress-free and enjoyable.

Save the Date cards are your guests’ first official introduction to your wedding day, and they serve an important purpose: giving your friends and family plenty of time to mark their calendars and make travel arrangements if needed. Typically sent 6-12 months before the wedding, save the dates are especially crucial for destination weddings, if you have guests traveling from out of town, or your wedding falls on a holiday weekend.

They’re simple and straightforward, usually including your names, wedding date, and location (city and state is enough at this stage). You can also hint at the overall theme or vibe of your wedding with the design, whether it’s elegant and formal or casual and fun. Think of them as a preview of the invitation to come, setting the tone while building excitement.

only send these to people that you're 100% sure you'll invite to the wedding. You can always send an invitation later, but it's awkward to take back a save the date if anything changes.

Pro Tip:

The invitation suite is the centerpiece of your wedding stationery, setting the tone for your big day and providing guests with all the essential details. Typically mailed 8-12 weeks before the wedding, the invitation suite is comprehensive, giving your guests everything they need to know to attend your celebration. It generally includes the main invitation, RSVP card, and other inserts like reception details, or information about additional weekend events.

The invitation, response card, and envelopes are the essential pieces of your stationery suite. From there, you can add insert cards or upgrade to an inner/outer envelope set.

belly band

A thin piece of paper that's folded around the invitation. It's available plain or printed in your choice of paper color or translucent vellum. Pairs perfectly with a wax seal.

envelope liners

Placed on the inside of the envelope, this paper adds a pop of color and weight to the envelope.

Wax Seal

Traditionally used to hold the mailing envelope closed, these days wax seals can be found on a belly band, vellum wrap, an insert card, or right on the invitation.

vellum folders

Vellum adds a delicate, airy feel to your invitations and allows for creative layering, making your suite feel even more luxurious. You can leave the vellum blank or add custom printing like your monogram or a decorative element.

silk ribbon

Use ribbon in place of a belly band as a softer option to hold the pieces in your suite together.
